Squared Rose

University Second Year Project
September 2014 - January 2015

At the beginning of Second Year of University were briefed on a project that happens every year, a company called Fizzco partners with the university for us to design products for their subsidiary company Squared Rose, which is a Christmas ornament/bauble company. We were to design products that would be for Christmas 2015 or 2016 so we had to predict the market trends that will be popular.

For our initial ideas pitch I had 3 design concepts, these were constellations designs, baubles for the visually impaired, and "A Couple's Skate" and engraved design. The latter two of these ideas the company wanted me to  develop.

"A Braille Christmas" was the range of designs that came from the idea of designing baubles for the visually impaired. What originally started off from the thought that Christmas isn't a great time for those suffering from red-green colour blindness, lead to research into different types of colour blindness and how common they are. I wanted to encompass a wide range of people included in the term visually impaired so also wanted to include Braille on the design.

The final range had 4 baubles with different holiday messages in Baillie on the outside, these all came in a full colour and monochrome variation to pick the best for the person in mind, I then also pitched these in both glass and ceramic versions to give the company a choice in which they preferred.

"A Couple's Skate" is a range of baubles designed around a couple skating on ice and the patterns it leaves. This design moves was aimed towards the trend in more blues being used at Christmas and couples buying baubles together for one of their first Christmas' together. They're skating side by side, going back and forth across each other's paths, and separating then coming back together again along their journey. This was pitched as a range again with five variations on the design and a possibility of customisation of having their name's engraved on it.
